Irish smart tariffs price the night at roughly half the day — and EV boost windows drop as low as 6–11c a unit against 35–38c daytime. A battery is simply the machine that lets your whole house shop in the cheap window.
It fills itself overnight (or from your panels by day) and runs the kettle, the wash and the telly through the expensive hours. For an evening-heavy household the gap is worth hundreds of euro a year.
Is it right for my house?
A good fit if…
- You have (or are getting) solar and export more than you use
- You're on — or willing to switch to — a smart tariff with cheap night rates
- Evening-heavy electricity use: cooking, EV, immersion, kids
- You want backup for short power cuts (some systems support it)
Probably not, if…
- Very low electricity use — there's not enough spend to save on
- A standard 24-hour tariff you don't want to change — night-rate is where standalone batteries earn
- Expecting a grant — there's no SEAI grant for standalone batteries, and we won't pretend otherwise

The questions everyone actually asks
Is there a grant for batteries?
Not for standalone batteries, no. When a battery is added alongside solar, the solar grant still applies to the system — the quote shows exactly what's covered.
How big a battery do I need?
Most 3-4 bed homes land between 5kWh and 10kWh. Bigger isn't always better — the survey sizes it to your actual usage.
Will it power the house in a blackout?
Only systems with backup capability, which costs a bit more. Say it at the survey if that matters to you and we'll spec for it.
How long does a battery last?
Typical warranties run 10 years. Modern lithium units are rated for thousands of cycles — daily use for well over a decade.
Do I need a smart meter?
For night-rate charging, yes — your supplier fits one free. No smart meter yet is no barrier to ordering.
